NL rnd 9: Aliens vs Holmlia

A thrilling summary of our latest exploits

After two wins on the trot, Aliens were full of optimism when confronted with the challenge of playing undefeated Holmlia at Ekeberg. Johannes tossed in the absence of captain Geoff (who was delayed) and actually had success. Electing to bat in hindsight was probably the wrong way to go after having a lot of recent success in bowling good teams out cheaply and chasing well. What is that old saying? 20-20 vision??????

After William Dennett pulled out of the side with nose trouble, Chris Maile put up his hand and partnered Travis Weston in an opening stand of 24 which included a fine off drive from Chris that put the Holmlia mid off fielder in hospital with a bout of tooth through lip. Chris was eventually out for 11 and his run of low scores continues to bewilder the rest of the team as we all know what he is capable of. This brought Geoff Brooker to the crease and he continued his good form from previous weeks with a brisk 24 from as many balls when he was caught on the square leg boundary. The score had moved on to 66 at this stage and our rock, Travis Weston, although struggling a bit for touch, was holding down the fort. Or so we thought. He was out virtually straight away trying to force the run rate a bit. This was to be the catalyst for an old fashioned Aliens collapse with Clowes, Cameron and Hussein all following quckly without troubling the scorer too much at all. Holmlias bowling was not as good as we made it look at all. There was definitely easy runs to be had and Johannes Scholtz helped himself to a few before being bowled by the arrogant stand in captain, Teimoor. Drew Eakin also showed he is finding a bit of the form he showed at the tail end of last season by making 16 well compiled runs from 17 balls faced before he too fell victim to the same @#?=. Simon Herbert, Mitch De Beurs and Nigel Hornby were not left with much time to do anything and were out swinging the bat.

With 110 runs to defend against a team previously undefeated, taking the field, Aliens were ready for anything. An opener who scored 154 against us last time we met took guard and the niggling began. As we suspected he could not handle it at all and this time we held the first chance he gave us and sent him packing for a mere 13 runs. The other opener was in stunning form and had compiled a massive 14 runs by the drinks break whilst losing two more partners. Another wicket directly after drinks and Aliens began to sniff something good in the air and it wasn't coming from the direction of Boxall on the boundary. All six bowlers were troubling the batsmen, in particular, James Clowes, who had them at sixes and sevens with his wiley leg spinners and he finished with the nice figures of 1 for 22 from 6 overs.

The total we posted just wasn't to be adequate however and Holmlia passed us with 6 of their 10 men out.

I am not going to mention the catch that was dropped at the death but will make special mention of a superb effort by Guy Harris, who took a blinding catch diving full stretch forward at mid off to dismiss the racy opening batsman, Rahil. Guy was 12th man on Sunday but was required to take the field when Travis Weston started to feel ill. Funnily enough his illness started shortly after accepting a suspicious looking pork chop from Guy Harris between innings.

A week off greets us now and then into action again against the other gun side, Jinnah. Lets give 'em curry.

NL rnd 8: Aliens vs Friends

A thrilling summary of our latest exploits

Following the first win in their two-and-a-half year existence the previous week against Grorudalen, Aliens set about the first game of second half of the season with something approaching confidence. They finished it dreaming of promotion, having ripped apart the same Friends bowling attack that had dismissed Aliens for just 117 in the first game of the season. If only Aliens had realised earlier in the season that they could bat, perhaps they would be challenging for a top-two place instead of mid-table respectability.

Another lost toss meant the Aliens fielded first and they opened the bowling with what has become the regular opening pair of Abid Hussein and Simon Herbert. Simon struck in the first over of what was a hostile spell. Both the openers are capable of bowling quickly and, when the ball moves around in the air and off the pitch like it did on this occasion, they have most batsmen in difficulty. Abid was plain unlucky not to take any wickets.

Friends scored slowly and lost wickets regularly. Indeed, it was not until Zedrik (aka Cedric, take your pick) came in when the fourth wicket fell, that Friends looked like posting a respectable target. Zedric is Friends’ best batsmen (why he bats so low in the order is a mystery) and he set about the Aliens attack with some gusto although he was lucky early on to survive a catch off Geoff Brooker’s bowling when Abid caught the ball inches over the boundary line. Well done to Abid for admitting this; it made the eventual result taste even sweeter.

Zedric was also lucky to survive a few balls later when he skied the ball (again off Geoff’s bowling) to silly point. So high did the ball go that any one of ten Aliens players would have had time to get in position and take the catch (the deep midwicket with the sprained ankle might have struggled to make the ground). Instead, despite (or possibly because of) having his call made for him by the captain, Nigel Hornby froze, with what is now known as the ‘horn-plosion’ and watched as the ball came down and plugged itself 5 foot into the ground. An excavator was called in to dig it out.

Zedric made another 30 runs before being caught in the covers for 43; one of James Clowes’ 5 wickets which restricted Friends to the 147 they finished on. Drew Eakin produced another excellent spell, giving away only 20 runs in a tight 6 over spell when Friends were trying to accelerate their scoring and Anthony Boxall took a wicket with his first ball thanks to a redeemed Nigel Hornby, who took a excellent catch standing up from an edge off a fiercely spinning leg-break. Nigel also took a fine catch to get rid of a dangerous-looking Yasmir.

Aliens will not lose many more matches this season if they continue the habit of scoring 150/1 from 24 overs, as they have done in each of the past two games. Indeed, over the past 2 games, Aliens have scored 299/2 in a just under 49 overs with both openers averaging in the region of 100. They lost their only wicket on 53 (Travis Weston leg before after another impressive knock of 24 that showed the value of good shot selection and good timing) and never really looked back, taking advantage of the plentiful supply of bad balls to flail the Friends? bowling all over the ground.

Geoff Brooker obviously relishes batting at number 3 when he can come in with 50 on the board from the opening 10 overs and William Dennett has at last started to rediscover the form of his youth after a 13 year break from the game. His 74 no was the highest by an Aliens’ batsmen for 2 years and this, together with a rapid 34 no by Geoff, ensured that Aliens won the game with 5 overs to spare. On this form, there will not be many teams in the division relishing the prospect of meeting a team that was, until a couple of weeks ago, known more for its record of losing than its cricketing ability.

After improving steadily each game over the last four weeks, Aliens have stunned the cricket world by recording the team’s first win in two and a half seasons. It is amazing that the victory came so easily and one could have easily been mistaken in thinking the Aliens were a top of the table team rather than the perennial cellar dwellers that the Oslo cricket world knows them as.

After losing the toss for the sixth time out of seven, Aliens were asked to take the field and did so with some rather groggy looking players positioned around the batsmen. This is the first game this year we were able to open the bowling with the much improved Simon Herbert and our new find Abid Hussein and the boys were not holding back. Grorudalens openers soon showed their intensions by letting their bats fly and giving the impression they were playing beach cricket. The first wicket was not long in coming and S. Herbert was the man to take it. A well judged catch by Anthony Boxall running around from mid-on saw Majid on his way back to the net area.

It was soon apparent that Aliens would have to dismiss Faisal, the other opener as he was scoring many boundaries with lusty blows and Abid soon enticed him into a slog to the mid-wicket boundary where a perfectly poised Chris Maile took a great catch on the run much to the delight of the team. Catching has not been a strong point of our game this year but we are getting there. That was 2-47 and then it was 4-48 thanks to Mr Herbert taking two more in his final two overs.

There followed a dangerous recovery and it was on 92 that the next wicket fell. It was Drew Eakin having the ?big mouth? Salman, caught behind for 10 with a ball of blistering pace. Salman looked uncomfortable his whole innings against our pace attack and our educated remarks at crucial times on batting technique and eating habits.

It was shortly after that the captain introduced himself into the attack and mopped up the tail with three quick wickets and a run out by Guy Harris finished Grorudalen off for 150 exactly.

Special mention to Nigel Hornby for the fantastic job behind the stumps. His three catches and one in the gob were a sight to see!

Again Aliens were in the game with a huge chance and Travis Weston and William Dennett strode to the middle with an attitude not seen too many times before in our short history. Confidence has been building in the team over the previous four weeks and the two openers took to the bowling and slayed it to all parts of the ground in a season best partnership of 95.

William was eventually out for a good knock of 33 from 44 balls and displayed some lovely strokeplay including some great pull shots and square cuts. Travis was meanwhile playing the innings of his life and pounded their attack with some shots only he could pull off. A couple of straight drives come to mind. Travis has shown enormous improvement this year and is now opening the batting regularly. He must be the most improved cricketer in Oslo this year.

He was joined at the crease by Aliens new captain, Geoff Brooker and the two saw off the remaining 55 runs in easy fashion. Geoff finishing on 36no and Travis on 71no. The game was won with more than six overs to spare. A fantastic way to notch up our first win ever.

May there be many more to come.

Match Report - Aliens vs Friends 11 may 2003

Well it's that time of year again people - the season is ahead of us with over 15 games to be played.

On the 11 May, the ACC were pumped up with new sponsored whites and some fancy hats making increasing our levels of confidence to even greater heights. The game at hand was against Friends, a team that overall is undefeated against the Aliens, yet failed to perform last year against the rest of the teams.

The game started with Geoffos Brooker tossing off, which Friends won, putting the ACC into bat.

Looking fired up, Geoff Brooker (C) and Willam Dennett went into bat. It was not long before we saw Geoff again, starting the season with a golden duck off a poor delivery outside the off stump. The captain's knock we anticipated did not come to avail.

Jamie Cameron then hit the crease and moments later the Aliens were 2-0. Not the start that we expected to achieve. A partnership started to develop with Jamie Clowes and Will Dennett over the next few overs until William was bowled on unlucky 13 - a partnership of 29.

Johannes Scholtz entered the middle with a quick fire 15 off 20 balls - a great knock. Jamie Clowes continued on his merry way with singles and doubles constantly increasing the scoreboard. Johannes was eventually caught on the boundary by a well taken catch. (ACC 4-63)

Travis Weston then entered the crease with some nervous anxiety. However once a few balls were blocked, the relaxed confidence kicked in, scoring a boundary and with Jamie Clowes, some excellent running between the wickets, taking the ACC to 5-100. "Howzat" was the appeal for LBW, and given it was, after Travis insisted that he had hit the ball, whilst grabbing his box, where the ball had hit. He was gone for 19 of 26 balls.

The Aliens with the help of Simon Herbert (2), Mitch Debuers (0), Guy Harris (0), Nigel Hornby (1) and Anthony Boxall (0) and the ever lasting rock known as Jamie Clowes (51 not out), managed a total innings score of 117 all out off 30 overs. Well in actaul fact most of those guys did not really help at all.

Not the start the ACC were after, but yes defendable - or was it.

After two quick fire wickets by Johannes Scholtz (1-21) and Mitch DeBeurs(2-32) Friends were 2-5. Mitch shortly after claimed another scalp and they were reeling at 3-23. Then the slogger of the century came in, otherwise known as Zedrik and scored 68 unbeaten runs with some good support by Aniz (17 not out).

The ACC had the game in hand with some awfully close balls missing the stumps by the smallest of margins, Mitch DeBeurs being the unlucky bowler on too many occassions. Two very difficult chances were missed in the slips, and a dolly missed by Lars in the closing stages of the match.

All in all, this was not the start to the season the Aliens wanted. However a lot of positives were taken out of the game, such as game intensity, Geoffs captaincy, Clowesy magnificent 51 unbeaten runs and some nice bowling by several of the team members.

Our next game will be against Holmlia, a team that is certainly playing to their ability and will be a serious test to the Aliens. The ACC must improve dramatically to secure two points at Stovner on the 24th May 2003.

With the inclusions of Drew Eakin (the house buyer) and Chris Maile (the trampalinist), we should have a strong team to execute Holmlia, literally.

Travis Weston
